Art Habit Introductions: Nikki Painter

Over the last couple of years, I’ve thought a lot about blogging as a way to share resources and connect with other artists. I struggled for a while with the idea of creating a blog on my own, but my inclination to write anonymously was strongly connected to an urge to focus on the negatives. Writing a blog with friends seems like a good way to hold myself accountable to write honestly and constructively.

There are a lot of resources online for artists now, and this is great. However, I notice that many of them skew positive, and the times when I’ve found myself wondering, "Is anyone else dealing with this (fill-in-the-blank-hard-experience-of-being-an-artist)", I haven’t found much evidence online. This is my personal challenge (and goal) for blogging: to share helpful information about the ups and the downs of being an artist, in a way that’s authentic, but not overly complainy.

About me: I’ve been working as an artist for over ten years, and my media includes painting, drawing, and collage works on paper, along with installations and small sculptures, but I consider myself a drawer first and foremost. I am currently focused on a series of works on paper inspired by gardens and nature but reimagined with a saturated (often fluorescent) color palette and maximalist use of pattern. I’m also currently trying to figure out how and/or if to discuss beauty and psychology in my working artist statement…
